Michael John Woodman (1961) I have discovered painting to be a kind of journey, constantly changing, always fresh and exciting - a bit of an adventure! Always enjoying the creative element and process, I like the way it evolves with limitless possibilities when portraying a scene. So the challenge of that white sheet before the brush stroke and paint strikes always thrills! My desire is to capture atmosphere and mood, so a camera and sketchbook are essential tools when out and about, and I am particularly inspired by our coastline, countryside and moorland here in Cornwall. I mainly work in my garden studio where I use a selection of resources to complete paintings. I surround myself with outdoor sketches, older paintings, photographs and some favourite books to inspire. 'Plein Air' painting is also an essential aspect of my work. It exercises my general skills as I attempt to capture tones and colours in their natural surroundings, so... if only to start a canvas, maybe complete a watercolour or just to gather some colour studies, it adds another dimension to the creative process.
